Back on Track (For Now)

On the mend and on the go once more. I was able to visit my cousin, though I managed to forget all of my medications at home. It was a good way for me to better notice how much of an effect the anti-depressant is having on me (a lot of good effect!). I only cut my trip short by a few hours, so things went very well. I took my pills Sunday night and by work on Monday I could already tell the difference. When I spoke to my Psychologist he mentioned that I was likely going through some form of withdrawal as well.

I was feeling better, though not at 100%, last week so I took it easy until I felt that I was mostly regulated. While I was giving myself the grace and rest I needed some organizing and cleaning up did occur. Since we are heading into winter I am going to keep up with the oregano and garlic oil supplements until they run out, though I might cut back to twice a week.

This week I have found myself diving headfirst into crafting again, though some of them seem a little more like procrastinating crafts, I have gotten quite a bit accomplished! I had a large piece of faux fur left over from when I tried to make a sensory quilt, it was just the right size to be a cushion for my weaving bench. It is about 5 foot long and very puffy so I hope it will work. My house is a little too messy for me to take a picture of the enormous pillow. I have decided that this winter I wanted to weave a ‘bog jacket’. This is a lovely piece of clothing made from whole cloth with minimal cutting and seams. It is my plan to weave about 9 yards of cloth on my rigid heddle loom that can make 31 inch pieces. I am going to use Knitpicks dishie cotton for the warp and likely the weft as well since I have a 7.5 dent reed. I already have 2 inches of warp wound off, when I have a little extra in pay I will buy the rest of the yarn I need. Fortunately Dishie is very standard and I don’t need to worry about dye lots. I am currently debating about whether I want to buy all white to dye myself or buy some colored yarn.

In the middle of November I am going to be a part of a murder mystery show and I need to make progress on the dress I wanted to sew for it. One of the items that I have started is the tulle petticoat, photo below. Honestly I’m not sure it’s going to work out but this is so much fun. I pinned the tulle in and did a rough basting stitch for the first batch. I plan on pinning and sewing in the elastic today, followed by sewing down the waist band and then putting in a hem for my pull on elastic petticoat. the library had a lot of tulle left over from other projects and I am supposed to be a flamboyant medium so I chose my favorite color purple.

There was an amazing sale on cotton muslin so I have 10 yards of natural cotton muslin that I need to cut apart to dye for a dress. I need to make the first try with the pieces I cut out of a tablecloth I purchased at good will. I did wash the muslin however it is going to need a good iron before I do anything else.

My library was getting rid of a ton of receipt tape while we were doing construction and no longer have the right machines to use this tape. I have been wanting to try spinning paper for some time and I did spin a large piece of this paper tape, it turned out amazing but it is such a pain to create with my wheel. When I am feeling creative and bored again I will try a spindle to see if that is any easier. If that is not possible I can use it for some sewing projects or coloring projects. Maybe even just writing lists out.

The last project is working with watercolors on fabric. My library purchased a circuit maker 4 and one of my co workers found a great price on a light board so I bought one for myself. I was then inspired by a picture of a shape painted onto a linen cross stitch fabric then stitched over with sequins and beads as accent. That picture was of a dragon, amazing, and I decided to do the same with a crow outline I had. I taped down the paper to the light board and then taped the fabric over top. I started with blue, then red, the black over all of it in an attempt to add some depth. I took the fabric off of the light board after I had the outline completed to avoid any bleedthrough onto the board, it is a good thing I did so. I hope to do some stitching over top of this then add embellishments like sequins and beads. I have not painted over the crow with fabric medium yet since I am afraid I will blur the image and I love how it turned out. I plan on getting my guts up and putting the fabric medium on today before I start stitching.

Progressing

I love how my Fey piece is turning out. The wings are tulle, the crown is made from beads that the person is for had purchased. I think I’ll add some red thread to the other side to signify their pain and death, then bind it.

You’re getting to know me and side-quests, these keyrings are my current side quest. They are faux cork with specialty ribbons as the loop. I love how they have turned out. At present they are being glued together then I’ll top stitch around the sides. I’m going to see if my sister wants one of the sparkly rainbow ones, or if I’ll put them all on my shop.

I am finishing up the three memorial pieces, rinsed off the top stabilizer this morning so I’m waiting for the other two to dry so I can do the fold over binding. I’m also using a tiny bit of fabric glue to ensure that the stitches on back will not destabilize, then I’ll whip stitch a couple of jump rings so that they can be used as wall hangings.

I am going to be seeing a lot of my family on Tuesday that I have not seen in years, if not decades. I have no idea how this is going to go. One of my relatives has offered me a place to sleep on the way there if I want to start out Monday night. Another has offered that I can stay with her and her daughters so I don’t have to leave immediately after on Tuesday. So I think I will head out early Tuesday morning the way I originally planned but then stay with my Cousin, I let her know I have to head out at 6am, so that should be okay.

I also randomly decided that I was going to sew a mask and a reversible hat for myself. I purchased nose pieces for masks when they were on clearance, so think that will be good for me this summer. The hat is more because I realized that with my thin hair my scalp can get sunburned easily and I need to prevent that.

I only have two more flowers and two more branches to hand sew before I can start embroidering the commissioned quilt again. All in all I have had a very productive week so far. I’m proud that I have gotten quite a bit of the items that I wanted to do complete. There are other things that I really do need to get working on, putting things onto my Etsy site, seeing about getting a couple of quick makes to set up an in person craft booth sometimes this summer, and so much more. At present the weather is going to be really hot and then thunderstorms so I don’t think I’ll be doing too much outside…though I did finally get my lawn back under control.

Things could be so much worse, I have no real room to complain. Given that until next time I hope that you Live Life a Little More Abstract!

Messing With a New (to me) Technique

For a couple of years now I have been seeing layered paper creations, the layers add depth and the paper makes them easy to cut out using something like a Cricut. Then, right before H&H Americas I saw that Snuggly Monkey was selling patterns for felt creations, some where animals with beautiful layers, while others were Hobbit Doors. I fell in love and picked up two patterns and some felt. I was lucky enough to encounter more felt when I stopped at a JoAnns on my way to H&H. I tried to cut one set out, and found the pieces small and fiddly. This is entirely a me thing, with my larger fingers I’m not great at tiny detail work. I hope to get back to it in the near future. This did get me wondering how people managed to create the separate layers however. I could see creating several copies of an image, getting an Xacto knife to cut out different elements for the layers and working with them from there hoping that you did it correctly and things would work together. Then a colleague of mine decided that they were going to go through our filing cabinet of older office supplies and dropped off some Carbon Paper to see if I can do anything with them.

I believe that I wrote earlier about making some reverse applique work and an art quilt, I plan on using some inspiration images to get different elements to create a whole. Well as I was looking for inspiration, something struck me. I can use a printout of an inspiration image and then use the carbon paper and a mechanical pencil, without lead, to trace the elements I would like in each layer. This also allows me to embellish them and make notes to myself. I did find out that the carbon does not rub off of fabric, so the Fey image I traced on white quilting cotton is not going anywhere, but I can use that to my advantage to make sure it is completely covered. Fortunately, the carbon does not ‘bleed’ through the weave either. I realize that this is just the very first step on my journey with these new creations, however I am very excited to see where it might go. Hopefully I can create a small sample soon. If I plan on doing this out of quilting cotton I will need to make sure that I properly applique the edges.

Inspiration From H&H Americas

I was lucky enough to be permitted to volunteer at the hand Weaver‘s guild of America booth as a demonstrator. I am not affiliated with or sponsored by any of the organizations or products mentioned here. I was very careful while attending this show to ensure that I did not bother vendors while they were speaking with their customer demographic, as this is their livelihood.

This post is mostly going to be pictures with minimal text if it is not obvious who the producer or organization being shown is I will add that.

These are some of the amazing items on display along with a featured crochet artist. I am not certain who made the very cute flame or the beautiful jacket.

The panel quilts are made using Camelot fabric.

There were many absolutely gorgeous quilts on display. I will admit that when I came home, I immediately went online to pick up the ultimate sashers collection by Pauline‘s quilter’s world. Some of the Sashing can be seen in the final quilt as the black outline is actually Sashing. The gentleman at the booth was kind enough to take a lot of time to describe to me the quilt as you go method and how the Sashing can be used for that. I do have several blocks on my embroidery machine that can be made as squares, and I am not very excited to use the quilt as you go method to create beautiful quilts and to experiment with the binding.

Coley craft had a wide variety of tools that were fascinating to look at. A lot of them are magnetic so they would hold up on either a magnetic pegboard or just a piece of metal like a cookie sheet that you put on the wall.

Ito had some brand new sparkly yarns that I just had to photograph although I know that sparkles do not show up well. The backlighting kind of wash these out but you get a bit of an idea. They were absolutely gorgeous in person. Louet purchased a new yarn line. I believe I mentioned that in the first post and these are some of the absolutely gorgeous colors as well as some of the kits that they will be coming in. I do not have a price but I will be on the lookout for them.

Word Switch = Mind Shift

As I wrote in my last post, I’ve been hustling to make earrings, necklaces, and other items, to stock up my Etsy shop, thinking of ways to improve my jewelry game to generate more (any) sales, etc. Then as I was looking at what tools I need to start getting serious about jewelry, soldering, etc., and pushing off whittling again, I came to a realization. In my mind I had switched around a few words of what I had created my etsy store for. I was working toward: “Crafting to sell”. My Original intention was: “Selling my Crafts”. I know, some of you are looking at that like, what’s the difference? The difference is intention.

For the first, “Crafting to sell”, changed the motivation of my work. I was not focusing on creating what I wanted or learning new skills to be able to teach my patrons at work, I was thinking about: “Will this appeal, does this go with the brand I am trying to build up, how can I market this?.”

For my original intention: “Selling my Crafts”, I was using up materials I already owned, learning new skills without worrying about putting something new out each day, and having the crafts I lovingly created going to new homes instead of just sitting around my house or being given as gifts to friends and family that didn’t really want them. I think that it is time for me to get back to my original intention, and allow the universe to generate sales from my lovingly crafted goods.

That is not to say that I am not going to post updates and new items onto my Etsy store. As one maker said, “Don’t wait until your crafts are perfect, put them out there and see if they appeal, then work on getting better.”

I have some loom beaded pieces that I am going to learn how to back, some cabochons that I am going to learn how to create beaded bezels around, and a secret project that I am working on perfecting before I, potentially, launch a kickstarter. Along with all of that I am trying to learn how to cut a straight line on my wood, or plane down to a straight line, without a power saw (Since I don’t own one). This is with the intention of making my own jewelry display, and possibly some of the projects I’ve seen on YouTube. There is one more thing, the next time I have some extra funds, I’m buying the whittling kit.

Back to Etsy for Now

Okay, so I did make one direct sale on Facebook and it really did come in handy since I am also trying to start building my own displays for the jewelry I am making. Right now I have re-opened my etsy store with plenty of earrings and some necklaces. ALittleMoreAbstract.etsy.com

I’ve also made a couple of necklaces, and I will be putting some Embroidered Pendants on sale later this week, likely Tuesday morning.

As you can tell I have been very busy crafting. I also have been destashing all of my ‘good yarn’ to afford a ladder to repair my downspout. This just became a bit more urgent since I found out that the water is seeping into my foundation. A Totally Different Direction

So, I have not made any progress on my banner or learning how to create bobbin lace. In the other hand I have been trying to figure out a good platform for selling my handmade crafts as well as creating stock.
I am hoping to participate in two craft shows this fall, however, they require a picture of your booth setup during the application. This means that I need to have significant inventory to display in the booth. Also, as it happens many selling website platforms cost on a monthly basis. In order to afford the platform as well as create more inventory, I have been attempting to direct sale my jewelry offerings on Instagram and Facebook. I’ll post my creations at the end of this post, however this has left little time for anything else except working on getting my yard ready for urban homesteading this spring and summer. That is a post for another day however. I am also planning on taking out my first batch of polished rocks this week so I hope to put up a brief update then.

Productive Burst

I was lucky enough this past week to have encountered a rare productivity burst. Throughout this burst I was able to get one of my rooms organized, start several projects, and make progress on other projects.

Not all of my projects turned out great, but most of them did what I wanted. The first paragraph is going to be about outside projects I was able to complete during a warm day, and the rest is going to be about crafts I have started, some are a little more artistic than crafty, but everything I do comes back around to crafts eventually. Even my garden, which is what the next paragraph is going to be about, is going to have plants that are good natural dye producers. Speaking of, onto the outdoor projects.

During a windstorm my downspout decided to blow off of my house. This seemed like a sign to add a rain barrel to my gardening. I bought a rain barrel, and the device to connect it to my downspout. To see if I was able to get away with a cheap solution I purchased a connector that was a little too big, sealant, and some screws intended for a downpipes, under $10, and decided to try to connect it from the ground… It didn’t work, but I really didn’t think it would I was just really hopeful. 

This means that I am going to have to wait a little longer since I will need to purchase a 7′ ladder, new downspout, and probably an elbow for the top. I also noticed that there is no downspout on the gutter that surrounds my porch so I’m probably going to add one on just to be sure. The downspout was not my only outside project, I also managed to put up my mini pop-up greenhouse. It is weighed down with some stones from my front yard and it currently houses my mower, clippers, and a few other gardening things. This prompted me to finally put together my two workbench sawhorses, one of which is currently in the greenhouse. I’m hoping to start some plants in March or April. Okay, let’s get into crafts now!

In getting my home back in order I have discovered several projects that I have been meaning to work on for quite some time. One of which is my Unicorn in the Library fiber from Hipstrings. I finally managed to finish spinning it up, I did split the last puff into 4 pieces so that I could spin some other fibers in between that I will use as ply experiments. I also rediscovered my love for spinning silk, this caused me to spin up some lengths that I will allow my library craft patrons to use in their slow stitching project. That reminds me I need to make up a sample for that sometime this week.

I have been exploring some crochet techniques, mosaic crochet was not as much of a success as I would like, I found a Tunisian Crochet pattern video that I am working through and transcribing into a written pattern, and I will be seeking out resources for two sided mosaic crochet to eliminate the weird stair-stepping I am getting on the inside of my mosaic crochet.

Now we are getting to the part where I can never be content, I have to try everything. I don’t know if I mentioned that I bought a Rock Tumbler? If not, well yes, I bought a rock tumbler, some sample rocks, ceramic media, and enough grit to last me a while. I have been watching YouTube Videos by Michigan Rocks for some time, and my Aunt mentioned not getting around to using her rock tumbler, plus a way to force myself to go outside to find rocks all combined to have me starting this new hobby. I have had a ton of fun so far, I have owned it for a month, and I managed to get my ceramic media tumbled through the first 3 stages ( I didn’t bother to polish it), as well as some of the bag of tiny chips that I only half regret purchasing. They aren’t going to turn into anything great, but I’ll run them through the cleaning and two polishing stages to see if I can get them to have a shine. I did put about three pounds of the bigger rocks into each of my two tumblers to get them started on the stage 1, I’ll pull them off on Saturday to see what they look like. I’ll put out a post of how to get started Rock Tumbling, as well as linking to some great resources later.

Of course I cannot start just one hobby at a time, you think I have any self control? I haven’t started this one but it is going to go hand-in-hand with the rock tumbling, I plan on wrapping the rocks in wire when they are tumbled. To be able to sell these for something like a decent price I plan on purchasing some Sterling Silver wire. I’m not selling necklaces, just the wrapped stones for now. This brings me to my last two projects that I’m working on, skipping over the fishing poles I purchased today because I found out that there are ‘no license fishing days’ in New York State. I will need to find pictures of the types of fish it is legal for me to keep, and I have to remember to invite my friend out since I bought her a (cheap like mine) fishing pole.

Okay, so I did manage to have a sale on my Etsy site (thank you to whomever bought the Dino Plushie) and that caused me to realize that I hate having to pay Etsy out of what I had calculated as earnings. I know that people look for inexpensive items, deals, and sales. This means that I’m going to be paying about .20 per item, every quarter (I think that is how often), create listings, and pay for shipping, to make very little if any money. I do plan on creating some spreadsheet and other printable items to put up on Etsy once I have them perfected, to create something like a passive income stream. I have some great ideas I just need to slow down and find enough time to start working on them, I think I might start staying a couple extra hours on the days I’m supposed to leave early, or go to Panera Bread for a couple of hours before I’m supposed to be at work to get these things done. 

Due to the slow nature of my Etsy Sales I have decided instead of dripping my products onto Etsy as I get them done, and sort of rushing to get them done, I will take a little more time and sign up for a couple of craft shows this Fall. There is one in September and another in October I would like to sign up for. There are registration fees, I’ll need another table, and I need to take photos of my setup, but all of that should be doable by September. I’m really sort of excited about this, though I am not sure what type of craft I should bring. There is an apple festival that mentions having old-fashioned crafts, so I’m thinking about seeing if spinning and weaving would work for them.

Biting the Crafting Bullet

This past weekend was about biting the crafting bullet and doing those projects I have been dreaming of, in one case for years. I will start with the craft I have been procrastinating about for less time, only a few weeks.

Earlier this year I saw the Tula Pink Deja Vu Nightshade collection that was going to be released in July. More important to this tale, I saw the quilts that Tula Pink had created to go with the collection. Immediately my attention was caught by “The Still Room” and I started looking for how I could pre-order the pattern. In my months of searching it seemed that I could order the kit for $186 or wait until the collection launched and then purchase the pattern. I waited, impatiently, for the collection to launch. Imagine my surprise when not only did the collection launch but the pattern was FREE on https://freespiritfabrics.com/projects/?page=3. The link is directly to the page that contains the Tula Pink patterns but I recommend looking at all of the free patterns. That being said, I still procrastinated for a couple of weeks. Finally over the last week I looked through my fabric and started pulling types and colors that I thought might work. This past weekend I bit the crafting bullet and started cutting out one type of block at a time to sew together. Instead of following the cutting diagram and cutting out all of the pieces for all of the blocks I decided to start with the blocks that had large motifs that needed to be fussy cut. Before going any further I am going to disclaim, at this time I have not purchased any of the Tula Pink fabrics, this project was entirely out of stash. I do hope to purchase some of this collection for some of my English Paper Piecing to take advantage of the fussy cutting. That disclaimer aside I have finished these first 4 blocks and no two are the same size, and they certainly are not the size called for in the quilt diagram, but I will be able to add sashing and such to fix them up.

Honestly, I think getting these 4 blocks finished this past weekend is amazing, however that is not all that I did!

I had made up some paper pulp from shredded mail, the recycling this week is paper so I thought I would finally start shredding some. I learned several lessons, the first is to take out all of the plastic windows before shredding paper that you want to turn into pulp because the plastic will tangle around your stick blender and then you have to unplug it to get the plastic untangled. The second is that even if you let your pulp sit in water for 3 days (I’m hoping 4 is okay because I want to pull another couple of sheets tonight) it just gets better. I know that it will likely start to mold in another day or two but there were also instructions for drying the pulp so it can be used later. The method is much simpler than I thought, there are tons of tutorials on the web so I don’t think I will go over it again here. I did purchase the kit from Crafter.com as well as the video instructions included there. I’m looking for ways to make more sheets of paper than I currently have ‘couching’ sheets for, so keep an eye out for that. I do love how the shredded mail had some weird inclusions that added different colors to my finished paper.
