Travel and Time

I believe I am almost entirely recovered from both the surgery and my cold. There is some white on my tongue that the Mayo Clinic website seams to indicate may be a bacterial infection, however salt water rinses should take care of that. I did manage to visit my cousin, though over the weekend rather than during the week. There is kerfuffle about the cars, however I will not bore you with that.

I absolutely love going to see my family, however I think I will limit my travel to spring and fall. In the summer work tends to take up most of my time with Summer Reading Programs, and I would like to focus on my garden some this year. Since I live in western New York winters can be dicey so I prefer to stay between work and home for those months. This means that, after the wedding, my next trip is likely going to be in October since I am teaching classes in September.

While I was visiting there was an amazing gem and mineral show that we attended. I purchased some lovely larger stones that I hope to use as focals or pendants, as well as a few tiny gem quality stones. I also had time to listen to a couple of audiobooks during my travels. One of which is “The Lost Art of Doing Nothing”. This is an amazing book that speaks about how in this day and age of instant gratification as well as the ability to entertain our selves with doomscrolling, or tik tok videos, we no longer take the time to allow ourselves to be ‘bored’. This means that all too often we do not allow ourselves to enter into a creative mindset. Most of the time the best of ideas come to you when you are in the shower or driving because you have little else to focus on so your creative mind can come out. Personally, I had a few good ideas while I was driving along so I used the notes app on my phone to make sure I will not forget them.

I hope to use this summer as a chance to explore my creativity, plant a beautiful garden, and set my workshop up for an amazing year of creativity. I am so very lucky that I have the opportunity and freedom to explore my creativity, get to spend time with my extended family more, and have an amazing job that I love. Starting Something New

I absolutely love playing with beads, usually I cannot get patterns, designs, colors, or anything else to work together. Yesterday, after I finished what I hoped to get done for the weekend, I decided to put “And That’s Why We Drink” youtube channel streamed onto my TV and play around with some beads that I have on hand. I created some center pieces for necklaces, beaded onto wire, with some wire links on either side to lengthen the necklace. I am debating adding some chain to both sides of the back of the necklace along with a lobster clasps to make an adjustable necklace.

This has been so much fun, I forgot how much fun it can be to just play with color. This was a great reminder that I do not need to complete a whole project in one sitting, I can make pieces and parts to put together in a finished piece later. I did make a bunch of finished pieces over the course of 3 days, however.

I decided that since I wanted to play with crimp beads and flexible wire I would make some hair accessories. All but one of these is made with semi-precious stone chips while the last is made from glass beads. I love how these turned out, from the crown of my head these brush my shoulder. I have thin hair so I will not make a good model, I am debating purchasing a wig and head to show these off, or seeing if someone will wear them for me.

This was the absolute best weekend for me to spend exploring, experimenting, and just enjoying the process. Remember to Live Life a Little More Abstract!

Not What I Hoped For

So, I took my rocks out of the tumbler after the final polish. I was excited but let them dry for 3 days before looking at them…and I was so disappointed. I think I know what I did wrong, so I will be taking all of my stones back to the second step and letting it run for a week to see if that will get the scrapes out of these rocks.

I believe that the problem is that I included the small/tiny rocks into the tumbling batch. I think that the tiny rocks banged up and scratched on the rocks that were ready to be polished. At least I hope so.

I plan on taking the rest of the rocks out of the second tumbler on Saturday morning to see if any of them are ready to go onto the second step, and then put those that are not ready back into the tumbler for the first step.

Thanks for reading my update, I’m still working hard on making jewelry and trying to sell on Facebook and Instagram under A Little More Abstract. I hope to have another post on Sunday, but if not then I will see you next week (hopefully with some pretty stones to show off).

A Totally Different Direction

So, I have not made any progress on my banner or learning how to create bobbin lace. In the other hand I have been trying to figure out a good platform for selling my handmade crafts as well as creating stock.
I am hoping to participate in two craft shows this fall, however, they require a picture of your booth setup during the application. This means that I need to have significant inventory to display in the booth. Also, as it happens many selling website platforms cost on a monthly basis. In order to afford the platform as well as create more inventory, I have been attempting to direct sale my jewelry offerings on Instagram and Facebook. I’ll post my creations at the end of this post, however this has left little time for anything else except working on getting my yard ready for urban homesteading this spring and summer. That is a post for another day however. I am also planning on taking out my first batch of polished rocks this week so I hope to put up a brief update then.
