The world is full of amazing opportunities for crafts and self expression. Sometimes there are so many opportunities I start five things at once…okay, often I start five things at once. I have made some progress on my aunt’s quilt, right now I am using clear thread to ensure that her applique is solid on the first set of flowers. I think that the center looks good, I’ll see if I can ask my cousin when I see her at the Funeral.
I am trying to find a pattern with Celtic meaning and a lovely phrase to commemorate my Uncle that passed, I’ll make three (one for each of his kids and one for his widow…maybe one for his ex?). Mostly that is adding the elements for the design and getting them stitched out.
My library is kicking off their summer reading program in two weeks and I found out last week that we will be having ‘spirit days’ that week. I will not be at work for two of them, however I will be at the library to volunteer at a booth for one of the guilds I belong to. This means that I need at least ideas, if not projects, for each of the other five days. One of them is for a piece of art or inspiration by an artist. I am currently working on an applique design for a t-shirt I purchased. Hopefully that turns out.
I am still low-key working on my Fey piece, it is currently percolating in the back of my mind as I sort through my fabrics, tulle, lace, etc.
There have been some great sales on embroidery patterns, I sort of need to lay off of purchasing those until I have made some products and sales.
In addition to all of that I have started playing around with Notion as a way to keep my projects organized and my inventory/purchases recorded. All of this is on top of my work stuff, a class I’m teaching this weekend, the funeral, and preparing for summer reading. I’ve bitten off a lot to chew, I hope I can keep up with it.
I did take time one morning before work for an artists date to the beach. Even though it means waking up super early I love going to the beach for sunrise, I got a great photo of the moon before it set.
Each summer seems to go by faster and faster as they years progress. This year I am going to focus on making sure that I have Fun and accomplish some of my crafty tasks that I would like to do. Part of having fun is making sure that I go on what Julia Cameron calls ‘Artist Dates’ each week. Yesterday I went to the beach to collect pretty rocks. I discovered that my water shoes rub on my bunions, it’s still foot numbingly cold in the water, and that I really enjoy listening to the waves crash against the shore. I am considering making some kind of quilt to memorialize this summer of adventure (hopefully). If you are looking for some kind of a challenge this summer there are plenty of opportunities.

Tour De Fleece is going to occur this July while the Tour De France is happening. The facebook group can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/447931545237090/ and there are plenty of fiber sellers that can provide you with their kits if you google Tour De Fleece. I know this as a spinning event, however you could easily do any kind of fiber craft.
If you don’t like those parameters there always seem to be various Crochet alongs, knit alongs, quilt alongs, sew alongs, etc. Perhaps you want to go to X number of retreats this summer (1 is a number), or you want to challenge yourself to creating/finishing a piece this summer. Whatever your challenge I hope that you are able to make progress toward getting it done.
As a ‘Photo Tax’ I have made progress…okay I started…quilting a quilt top for a family member. She made the top and asked me to do the quilting. I almost have the center motif done, hopefully she likes it when I am done.
At present I am trying to build my ‘side hustle’ into an actual business that brings me some income, joy, and purpose. To that end I have started batching some of what I have decided I want to create as well as signing up for some amazing opportunities. One of the major challenges, and ultimately advantages, that I have is my ADHD. Due to my body’s inability to produce the proper chemicals that induce focus it is either very hard for me to focus on a particular task, or it is too easy for me to go down a ‘rabbit hole’ and lose complete track of time. The latter has not really happened for me since I got out of Grad School, which unfortunately means that I have not been able to do any of what is referred to as ‘deep work’ since that time. After my diagnosis, at age 40, I was put on medication. The first was too strong, and had adverse side effects. My current medication allows me to focus on tasks, remember side thoughts, and come back to those side thoughts without having to write them down or keep repeating them with a single minded focus lest I completely blank on what I was supposed to be doing. It is a singularly unsettling feeling realizing that people can go around knowing what they have to do without blanking when they reach their destination then having to retrace your steps and thought process so you remember what you thought you should do two minutes ago.
Recently, I have learned how to utilize my ADHD, medicated state, and newfound purpose to create systems where I can batch my projects. I have two running at the same time currently. With JoAnn Fabrics closing they are having some serious sales. This is allowing me an opportunity to purchase craft felt at a very discounted price. I am using that felt to create pencil/pen/paintbrush rolls. With the scraps I am creating corner bookmarks that I am hand embellishing with a variety of techniques, embroidery, beading, etc.
To effectively batch my tasks I find that thinking about what the next step is going to be at night before I go to sleep gets me interested and motivated the next morning. That is not going to work for everyone, however it is the method that is working for me. I will walk through my creating pencil rolls as an example, each * indicates a day/morning so you get an idea of how long this is taking me:
*I had some leftover fabric and a lot of pens/pencils/markers. I wanted a way to take them with me in case I decide that I want to try my hand at being ‘artistic’ while taking walks on the beach. I did a quick sample and liked how it looked. Then Joann fabrics had a lot of craft felt remnants for sale for literally pennies on the dollar. This felt is both sturdy enough to hold pens and light enough to roll well. An idea was born, also I plan on going to a conference in the near future and would like something that I can ‘give away’ to promote my business.
*I started batching, the first step was to cut the felt to what I thought would be the correct dimensions. I took a few hours to cut all of the pieces that I would be using to very similar sizes.
*The next day I pressed all of the felt out since many pieces were wrinkled and I had over 30.
*I decided how tall I would like the pockets to be, out of fleece fabric I had in my stash and picked up on clearance, then cut them to the same length of the craft felt. After that, and on the same day, I folded over the top about 1/2″ and did a quick straight stitch hem to have the top looking nice.
* I took the tallest pen that I had to make sure that the felt would be tall enough, I discovered that the back and pockets were both too tall.
* After some frustration, I chose to cut down the felt and resize the pockets. Thus began my second batch project. I took a day to cut these down, while realizing that it was not realistic for me to plan on making dozens of these rolls in time for the event. That is alright, I already have an etsy store and I can bring some to gauge interest. The felt will be great for corner bookmarks.
* I cut down the felt to the correct size for the corner bookmarks and then cut some of them diagonally to create the flap for the page to sit in (thus making it a bookmark).
*During the evenings or when I have a few free moments and feel creative I use various threads to embellish the corner flap of my bookmarks and do the stitching that holds the two pieces together. Beads, buttons, thread, whatever I can get my hands on and whatever stitches I think of are being used to embellish these.
*I did a sample of the slots for my pencil wraps, using a seam ruler I placed it inside the pocket and that became a hard guide for my presser foot. This sort of worked, however I hated how it looked since there was a ridge in the middle of the slot where the ruler stretched the felt a little.
*After some thought I realized that I could use tailors chalk to mark the ruler spacing on the back of the felt and sew along those lines. I have completed one and like how that turned out.
*I had some faux leather and cut that out the same size as the felt so I could create a waterproof backing for the pouch. Placing the faux leather face down on the pocket side of my piece, I sewed along three sides leaving one open to turn and place the cord.
*I pressed the piece once it had been turned right side out. I hate how the leather looks since it just about refuses to lie flat. This could be in part because my iron is set to synthetics, however, perhaps not. I used sewing clips to flatten out the edges some as well as holding the open side so that I can use a top stitch to close that up, as well as inserting the cord.
This is as far as I have gotten, I just put the clips on the faux leather sample yesterday evening. I plan on sewing the sample closed as a demonstration piece. Fortunately I have quilting cotton and thin fleece fabric that I can machine embroider on, this should create a cleaner finish for my pencil rolls while having an embellishment to draw attention.
I am not working quickly, I am trying to be both efficient and produce lovely products with minimal waste. This is a great chance for me to explore different stitches with the bookmarks, play around with my embroidery machine, use up thread and cords I had lying around, and (hopefully) create beautiful projects that people will purchase to help fund my exploration.
I hope that this helps some of you who might be stuck trying to figure out how to get bulk products out the door. While I certainly took my time by taking each step one day at a time, there are ways that you can batch these tasks and do them within one day, for example cutting the felt and fleece to the correct sizes could have happened on the same day, even cutting whatever you would like to use as your ‘pretty’ fabric for the outside of your pencil roll.

This post was started 2 weeks ago, however I am going to continue adding on instead of starting anew. I have decided to start 2025 strong and do my best to keep up my momentum throughout this year. Prioritizing connections, with friends and family, as well as keeping myself safe physically, mentally, and financially. Crafty Content will begin after the ****** line.
Yes, I know, lofty goals. The last thing that I did in 2024 was to visit my cousin about 6 hours away, it was so much fun and low key. For this first weekend in 2025 I am visiting my sister about 3 hours away. *Edit, the visit took place the following week, it was lovely.* Admittedly, that is more because she is planning on moving 1 day and 14 hours of drive time away from me, so visiting will be more difficult. I hope/plan to continue this trend by visiting my friend in Texas sometime before September. The most exciting for me is that I am going to be able to rejoin my weaving and quilting guilds. This will start in March, I already have the time taken off. My cousin invited me up for their Easter Egg hunt so I hope to make that as well (I already took the time off).
I am trying to minimize my craft spending this year. That does not mean that I will pass by an amazing deal (see the 7 zippers I purchased for less than $3), however I will pass on fabric, etc, that I will not actually use, or that I will store for ‘someday’.
The major obstacle that I have for this is not knowing what I have for each craft. To get things organized I purchased one of the photo keepers from Michaels, on sale for $13 from $40+, and have used this to get my sewing supplies organized. Needles in one, hand stitching thread in another 2, pins in another…well 2, safety pins in 1, etc. I do still have one of the units empty within the larger case, but that will get filled up soon enough. I used an amazing label maker to add a label on the edge of each mini case so when I open the unit I can see what I have in each one rather than pulling them all out to find what I am looking for. This has been so handy I am thinking of getting another, but not until I know what I would put in it…though Jewelry supplies looks like a good idea at this moment.
I mentioned earlier that I visited my Sister in Pittsburgh, this is also the location of the closest IKEA to me. We visited IKEA, this was great for me as it gave me an opportunity to see the various shelf options and organizers in person. I did purchase a couple of bookcases that I am using to practice some personalization options on, then they will be great for storing my craft supplies where I need them in a visual way. I’m not going to show you that process until I have it more refined.

I’m sorry I have not posted in a while. I have been trying to get some things related to my business accomplished, however, I have also recognized where all of my emotional and physical energy has been going.
To begin with, I am the type of person that if I surround myself (on purpose or accident) with negativity it completely drains me of energy, increases my anxiety, depresses me, and causes my IBS to get out of control. I recognize this about myself. According to my therapist I also have a hard time letting people in and when I do then I do whatever I can for them. Recently I have realized that someone that is undergoing their own mental health problems has been utilizing my compassion and friendship as a dumping ground for their negativity. At one point I had asserted that I could not take a ton of negative energy that day, their response was if I cannot talk about anything negative then I have nothing to talk about. Subconsciously, this triggered me to realize that if I want them to feel free to talk to me at all I HAD to absorb their negativity. This means that anytime that person asks me, “Are you okay to hear about this?” I felt that I had to respond yes, I was okay or they would shut down. Again, my attachment causes me to be blind toward these things until I am run down and messing my health up.
I had come to this realization before my trip. I was dreading the trip, my therapist did say that I could only provide the framework for a good experience and everything else is up to the guest. I am sorry about the car ride, they say that they forgave me, but they are also being very passive-aggressive.
If you come away from spending time with someone drained, and you dread seeing someone, then they are not the right person for you to be spending time with.
My energy for the next three months is going to be focused elsewhere. This is the last of my focused attention that person gets.
In terms of the crafts I have been working on:
One of my Aunts asked me to do some embroidering (on my embroidery machine) for her. This caused me to look at other websites that have embroidery files available, and it is amazing some of the artwork out there! There is some chatter about restrictions being placed on patterns, what I have seen is most of the retailers are trying to restrict large businesses from taking their artwork and doing major production with it. I’m not going to do that, though I do question whether they are able to restrict access that way. I’m not planning on doing any major production, however I am hoping to create some book covers for notebooks having to do with Pride right now. After that is done, and I have sent my Aunt all of the pieces she requested (and more of course), I am going to play a lot more with my Embroidery Machine and some of the amazing patterns available out there.
My garden is coming along pretty well, though I did thoroughly drown my carrots. I am going to take some time this week, since I took time off of work for another friends wedding that is not happening now (long story not mine to tell but the couple is still happily together), to work on my garden and figure out how I can mow around all of my planters. I might also just work on making paths/planting into the ground, so that I don’t have any grass growing in my front yard. I already put down landscaping fabric so that a lot of the grass is killed in the medium between the sidewalk and the road. After the grass dies down I plan on planting tons of bulbs to create beauty.

As I wrote in my last post, I’ve been hustling to make earrings, necklaces, and other items, to stock up my Etsy shop, thinking of ways to improve my jewelry game to generate more (any) sales, etc. Then as I was looking at what tools I need to start getting serious about jewelry, soldering, etc., and pushing off whittling again, I came to a realization. In my mind I had switched around a few words of what I had created my etsy store for. I was working toward: “Crafting to sell”. My Original intention was: “Selling my Crafts”. I know, some of you are looking at that like, what’s the difference? The difference is intention.
For the first, “Crafting to sell”, changed the motivation of my work. I was not focusing on creating what I wanted or learning new skills to be able to teach my patrons at work, I was thinking about: “Will this appeal, does this go with the brand I am trying to build up, how can I market this?.”
For my original intention: “Selling my Crafts”, I was using up materials I already owned, learning new skills without worrying about putting something new out each day, and having the crafts I lovingly created going to new homes instead of just sitting around my house or being given as gifts to friends and family that didn’t really want them. I think that it is time for me to get back to my original intention, and allow the universe to generate sales from my lovingly crafted goods.
That is not to say that I am not going to post updates and new items onto my Etsy store. As one maker said, “Don’t wait until your crafts are perfect, put them out there and see if they appeal, then work on getting better.”
I have some loom beaded pieces that I am going to learn how to back, some cabochons that I am going to learn how to create beaded bezels around, and a secret project that I am working on perfecting before I, potentially, launch a kickstarter. Along with all of that I am trying to learn how to cut a straight line on my wood, or plane down to a straight line, without a power saw (Since I don’t own one). This is with the intention of making my own jewelry display, and possibly some of the projects I’ve seen on YouTube. There is one more thing, the next time I have some extra funds, I’m buying the whittling kit.

I am never satisfied with ‘good enough’ and I have decided to take on some new learning projects as well as a new big project. I’m going to start with learning, those are wire wrapping (which I mentioned in my last post) as well as Bobbin Lace. I have some already polished stones that I have purchased over the last few years, a few are shapes, and copper wire is relatively inexpensive. These factors combined with the desire to not mess up expensive Silver Wire, has me trying to wrap some smaller stones. This is proving to be a little more difficult than I anticipated, but I expected that since I’ve tried a little playing with wire in the past. Currently superglue is keeping the wire on this cabochon so I’m not really happy with myself, however it is a learning curve.
Bobbin lace is proving to be a lot of fun, I’m not sure it is going to be something that I can teach my library patrons but perhaps.
I was looking at buying a banner for my craft booth, and for a 2’x4′ it looks like about $40-$60 is what that would cost. Perhaps if I want it very simple I could get away with $35…but why not make my own banner? Admittedly, it is not going to be waterproof since it is going to be a Machine Embroidered Quilt…but on the other hand, it’s going to be an embroidered quilt banner…I’m so happy about this idea!

I had the amazing opportunity to visit my cousins in New Jersey for a long weekend. Though the primary goal was to spend time with my family they also planned events that accidentally checked off two of my life long ‘to dos’. First and foremost, it was amazing to spend time with that part of my family, I have not seen them since last July and one of my cousins has had a child since then. The first full day I was there started off with a High Tea, my cousins children were just adorable, then visiting another cousin to see their children and feed baby goats. I have always wanted to experience a high tea, and it was just as amazing as I thought. This also reinforced my knowledge that I love Chai tea. The next day I was able to see another cousin and have a picnic at an arboretum, as well as visit a Raptor Sanctuary. All of these events were punctuated by amazing snuggles with my cousins children, playing games, catching up, and generally having an amazing time. On my final day, after the children were off to their respective schools, my cousin and I each took a nap (though mine was accidental), then they took me out for an amazing Dim Sum lunch before dropping me off at the airport. The Dim Sum was another check off of my life long list. I am sad that I had to get back for work and missed a show that my cousins child was going to be in, however I love how much time I was able to spend with them. All of this ties into crafting, I swear!
Aurifil has partnered with several artists and other organizations to bring about a summer project where you use particular sheets, assign colors to specific topics/events, and document your summer by creating shapes that look like sea glass in the colors that represent that event/topic. I think this is an amazing idea…that I would never follow through. With the exception of my past weekend I tend to keep my life relatively low key, though that might change a bit in the near future given how much fun I had. Instead I like the idea of documenting my year in 10″ squares with highlights or particular circumstances represented in each square. June would probably be a 9-patch with sections that explore the amazing aspects of my vacation. This is just a conceptual project for now, though I am eyeing my fabric stash and trying to figure out the major events of the first half of my year.

I have always loved the look of bookcase quilts. I have decided to make a personalized spin on a bookcase quilt. It is one of my annual goals to try to read 100 books each year, I have recently started to allow rereads to count. Otherwise, I will never make that goal. What is more fun than combining those two goals? To do that I have started embroidering what will be the book spines with the titles and authors that I have read. I discovered that I can fit eight to ten spines on a fat quarter. I used a peel and stick wash away stabilizer so that the fabric was stable enough for the embroidery machine. I made sure that the stabilizer was on the far side of the fat quarter, so that there was plenty of room to cut the spines a part down the middle.
Since I do not like changing the thread, I decided to ensure that there were at least one or two other books in between each so that I will not have a huge chunk of the same color spines. There are a couple of series that I decided would be OK if they are the same color, so that is why all of my Shelly Laurenston books are on this fat quarter. I have decided to give myself about half an inch to an inch around each spine so I measured that out and cut each one out individually.
Since we have not even reached the halfway mark of the year, I am not going to worry about sewing the spines together quite yet. It’s probably going to be a couple of months before I do another batch of spines, so that I have enough titles to avoid embroidering a whole batch of titles right next to each other, on the same kind of fabric. When I do assemble the quilt, I plan on assembling the spines in the order that I actually read the books. I have trimmed the tops and bottoms of the spines, so that there is plenty of room just saw them together yet the books are not all the same height.
For a few of them, I have experimented with adding a different color to sort of look like fancy spines. Right now I have them in blocks 14 inches wide and I will eventually add a background color to the top so that the actual block is the same height. This is as far as I’ve gotten planning this quilt, it has been put on hold for right now, until I have read more books and until my Etsy shop is open. My Etsy shop will be opening June 2, 2023 and I hope to see everyone there.

A Little More Abstract
